Just about one year since closing on its acquisition of Nimble Storage, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced the next generation of the HPE Nimble Storage platform highlighting a three-times improvement in price performance — and a guarantee.

The HPE Store More Guarantee assures customers that they’ll be able to store more data per raw terabyte of storage compared to any other vendor’s All-Flash array. If HPE is not able to meet the storage efficiency of an all-flash competitor, the company will accommodate the incremental storage for free, it said.

“We know from our customers that storage capacity efficiency is important to them, so we’re proud to be the first vendor to offer them a guarantee,” said Milan Shetti, general manager, storage, HPE. “This guarantee further differentiates the HPE storage offering, which already includes HPE InfoSight, a predictive analytics platform that prevents infrastructure problems before they happen.”

Additional features included in today’s all-flash storage announcement include:

  • NVMe and Storage Class Memory (SCM) ready arrays: These address the needs of web analytics, business intelligence, real-time trading and other applications that require instant results. The arrays are future-proofed, so customers can take advantage of emerging technologies without forklift upgrades in the future.

  • HPE Nimble Storage Adaptive Flash arrays: These merge hybrid and secondary flash technology into a single array. Additionally, the arrays support inline variable deduplication, making them the most efficient hybrid arrays in the industry by a wide margin, the company said.

Initial availability of products from Nimble Storage was announced in May 2017, just one month after the close of the acquisition.

The top 2018 prediction for the storage market, according to Scott Sinclair, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), is that flash storage will continue to grow and that organizations will also adopt NVME technology to better harness its power.

“NVMe unlocks the true potential of flash, and that potential is far more than just high performance,” he said.

HPE, NetApp, Dell EMC, Pure Storage and IBM are all major players in this growing market space. In an IDC third quarter 2017 report, the researcher noted that all-flash, software-defined and converged/hyperconverged systems continue to be the driving force for traditional storage vendors.

The all-flash array market generated almost $1.6 billion in revenue in 2017’s third quarter, up 38 percent year over year, according to IDC. Total worldwide enterprise storage systems revenue was up 14 percent, reaching $11.8 billion in that same quarter.
