The year 2015 has ushered in a host of merger and acquisition activities in the managed services market already. Here are 10 acquisitions that managed service providers (MSPs) need to know about for this year so far.
Technology management, consulting and outsourcing company Aldridge and Dallas-based MSP Twist Solutions have joined forces to form one of the largest IT providers in Texas. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but Aldridge Vice President Mark Leary pointed out that there were several reasons his company acquired Twist: “Twist is a ‘pure-play’ managed service provider … This makes [Twist] very easy to integrate into the Aldridge team.”
Buffalo-based MSP Globalquest Solutions last month announced the sale of its IT services division and renamed the resulting business Buffalo Computer Help. Globalquest Solutions CEO Aaron Fox and Chief Technology Officer Mike Morlock (pictured above) bought the company’s IT services division from founder Martha Martin. And together, Fox and Morlock have launched the renamed MSP that is focused on small office, home office and carry-in computer support.
Cloud services company Evolve IP purchased Webcore Technologies, an Austin, Texas-based MSP, last month. Full terms of the agreement were not disclosed; however, Evolve IP Chief Operating Officer Guy Fardone told MSPmentor that his company now has the opportunity to bundle its nationwide cloud computing with Webcore’s remote management and help desk offerings, which could appeal to businesses that want to leverage the cloud.
Washington, D.C.-based MSP eGuard Technology Services has acquired NewTeQ Computer Services, an MSP that supports small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in and around Frederick, Maryland. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The acquisition allows eGuard to extend its geographic reach and provides the company with a new growth avenue, eGuard CEO Khaled Farhang said. NewTeQ customers will now be able to use eGuard’s services as well.
Security-as-a-service (SECaaS) company Alert Logic announced it has acquired Critical Watch, a Dallas-based security analytics and vulnerability management platform provider. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Alert Logic Chief Strategy Officer Misha Govshteyn told MSPmentor that Critical Watch’s technologies will be integrated into Alert Logic Cloud Defender and the Alert Logic ActiveAnalytics Platform.
Hybrid IT solutions company Datapipe has added GoGrid, a San Francisco-based infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) provider, to its portfolio. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Datapipe Chief Marketing Officer Craig Sowell said he believes that the acquisition of GoGrid enables his company to offer customers “the most advanced solutions for implementing and managing big data environments on the cloud.”
Data, voice, security and hosted IT services provider MegaPath finalized the sale of its network services business to Global Capacity, a Chicago-based connectivity-as-a-service company. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. D. Craig Young, MegaPath’s CEO, said his company plans to use the money from the sale of its network services unit to reduce its debt and invest in its cloud and managed services businesses.
j2 Global‘s (JCOM’s) Excel Micro business has acquired the assets of Nuvotera (formerly Spam Soap), a California-based email security services company and cloud services aggregator for MSPs and value-added resellers (VARs). Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and it was unclear if the “asset” sale included employees of Nuvotera or if those employees were not invited to join j2 Global. Hemi Zucker, j2 Global’s CEO, said Excel Micro’s addition of Nuvotera could help the software-as-a-service (SaaS) distributor extend its email security services market reach.
SolarWinds (SWI), the parent company of N-able, has acquired cloud monitoring company Librato for $40 million in cash. The announcement of the deal was released at the same time as the company’s Q4 and year-end earnings. SolarWinds CEO Kevin Thompson told analysts during the company’s Q4 earnings call that Librato manages applications across cloud infrastructure.
ConnectWise has acquired ScreenConnect, and LabTech Software also announced the addition of ScreenConnect remote control to its remote monitoring and management (RMM) platform, free of charge to its IT service provider customers. LabTech Software CEO Matt Nachtrab told MSPmentor that the ScreenConnect deal was ConnectWise’s largest investment to date. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
