What’s in a name? Just ask BHI Advanced Internet Inc., the Minnesota-based Internet security services provider decided to change its name to SecureConnect Inc. in early July. BHI has been operating as a subsidiary of SecureConnect for the past decade, so the name change doesn’t signify a huge shift. But it does bring an end to the 18 year history of BHI as a standalone branch.

It was founded as Black Hole BBS in 1994 and later changed to Black Hole Internet in 1996. The company was renamed BHI Internet Solutions in 2001 when the company’s primary focus switched to providing business-class ISP services.

This latest name change is an effort to better reflect SecureConnect’s brand, core offerings and solutions for SMBs, according to a prepared statement from SecureConnect CEO Dave Perrill. “This transition marks a significant milestone for our company,” said Perrill. “As we have evolved to become a leading service provider in the industry, the name SecureConnect more accurately communicates our dedication and commitment to providing essential security services, guidance and expertise to merchants.”

SecureConnect gain recognition earlier this year when it was named to the 2010 Inc. 5000 list of the fastest growing companies in the United States. The company’s main goal is to help its retailer, hospitality and restaurant clients become PCI compliant by providing what it calls “flexible and scalable solutions…to achieve compliance with ease.” SecureConnect offers four PCI compliance packages — Basic, Select, Premier and Elite.
