Anyone working in the UC and VoIP space know the importance of a good Session Border Controller to help manage voice, video and data traffic effectively. However, such technology traditionally has been available to the enterprise only, leaving SMBs with few options in performance and traffic management realm. But Edgewater’s latest SBC aims to help that previously underserved space with its EdgeMarc 250 Series Border Controller. The company has its eye on making this an all-in-one package that’s robust, price-friendly and interoperable with a host of products, but does EdgeMarc 250 answer the call? Read on …

With the EdgeMarc 250, Edgewater is looking to cover all the bases in branch and SMB VoIP needs with an “application aware” firewall, protocol mediation, real-time traffic shaping for video and voice conferencing, and the ability to monitor traffic in real time for understanding, optimizing and fixing VoIP issues. The EdgeMarc 250 supports up to 10 devices simultaneously and also comes equipped with standard VoIP and UC technology including SIP trunking and the ability to do “enterprise-level” video, plus the added bonus of supporting analog phone and PBX linking into the IP environment.

Hosted PBX and other UC applications are also supported with the new appliance. Tech specs of the EdgeMarc 250 series include:

  • One 10/100 Mbps Ethernet WAN port

  • One ADSL 2/2+ WAN ports

  • Eight 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports

  • 802.11 b/g/n WAP

  • Four FXS ports

  • One FXO port

  • One USB port

The price listing for the EdgeMarc 250 can vary, but starts at an easy $375, but can go up to $652 depending on a user’s needs. Edgewater hasn’t traditionally been our radar, but we’ll be sure to keep tabs on their UC momentum, especially since the company has partnered with more well-known companies such as Polycom and Mitel.
