Five Questions: CharTec CEO Alex Rogers

Alex Rogers is outspoken. Strongly opinionated. Unfiltered. And that's just when he's on vacation fishing. Now, imagine Rogers' personality while in a room mentoring aspiring and established managed services providers (MSPs). As CEO of CharTec, Rogers will do exactly that on March 21-22, when he hosts Service Operations Academy in Bakersfield, Calif. What trends does Rogers see emerging for his attendees? Here are five questions we intend to raise.5. Hardware as a Service: I concede — I have never quite understood exactly how the HaaS market works. I know it's more than leasing. I know customers pay MSPs a flat monthly fee to hardware. But I never quite understood the financing options. Nor do I have a complete feel for who takes on the risk if customers stop paying for the hardware. Alex, I could use some guidance.
4. The Art of the Deal: About three years ago, ConnectWise Capital and CharTec announced a joint venture. Exact financial terms were never disclosed. Without probing into the financial details, what did Rogers learn about setting up a joint venture? What advice would he give to MSPs who are considering simular business relationships?
3. Software-only BDR: Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR) remains front-of-mind for MSPs. How is CharTec's own SaaS-based BDR performing? And how did customers react to the 10-click installation process that CharTec introduced last year?
2. Balancing Act: Rogers also runs ARRC Technology, an MSP. How does Rogers balance his time between ARRC and CharTec? And how do business developments in each company affect the other?
1. Secret Sauce?: CharTec's headquarters is in Bakersfield, Calif. — a few hours north of Los Angeles. The town is not a major business hub. Yet, CharTec attracts MSPs over and over to the headquarters for training. What's the big attraction? I'll be watching closely for answers.
