Friday's Last Word: Scale Computing CEO Jeff Ready
Scale Computing CEO Jeff Ready founded the company back in 2007 to develop clustered IT infrastructure products for small to medium-sized organizations. But he's not always working. Find out about his favorite gadgets, his business/technology heroes and what he does to pass the time on long flights.
Scale Computing CEO Jeff Ready founded the company in 2007 to develop clustered IT infrastructure products for small to medium-sized organizations. The company has now grown to more than 1,000 deployments. Which country singer did he build a light up LED sign for? We’ll provide you with the answer, along with other interesting facts.
READY: I don’t go to a lot of concerts. Last one I went to myself was Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. But, I did spend two days building a light up LED sign that my girls took to the Taylor Swift RED concert, so I feel like I went to that one, even though I was home playing Xbox when they were there.
TALKIN CLOUD’s SPIN: You almost convinced me to give you credit for the Taylor Swift concert.
READY: Despicable Me 2. Hilarious.
TALKIN CLOUD’s SPIN: We’ve had CEOs in the past few weeks provide the same answer. Maybe it’s time for us at Nine Lives Media to take some time out of the weekend to catch-up on culture outside of the channel.
READY: Last new album was Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. But, just this week I purchased Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction after it mysteriously disappeared from my iPhone.
TALKIN CLOUD’s SPIN: Daft Punk recently made the news for cancelling on Stephen Colbert. Bad decision on their part?
READY: 24. I don’t watch much TV live except for football, and 24 was no exception. But it was the perfect show to kill time on long flights, where I could watch episodes back-to-back in marathon format, always trying to squeeze in one more before landing. WE’RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!
TALKIN CLOUD’s SPIN: Don’t worry, we’re not running out of time here. We still have more slides.
READY: That would be hyperconvergence as showcased in our HC3 product. The idea that the hypervisor and virtualization itself isn’t something that should be actively managed as part of an infrastructure — instead that it should be a technology that gets leveraged and used, but isn’t front and center.
TALKIN CLOUD’s SPIN: Scale Computing HC3 aims to integrate storage, servers and virtualization into a scalable, turnkey infrastructure that’s as easy to manage as a single server.
READY: I bought a new high-end Turtle Beach gaming headset for Xbox. I need anything I can get to compete with those cheating 14-year-olds in BlackOps 2.
TALKIN CLOUD’s SPIN: The best way to compete with them is by lobbying for a longer school day.
READY: Running With Friends. It’s okay I guess. Gets old pretty quick, but it’s OK if I’ve got a few minutes at an airport, I suppose.
TALKIN CLOUD’s SPIN: Nothing like a With-Friends game to kill time at the airport.
READY: Well the guys who I admire as entrepreneurs are Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and Jeff Bezos. Steve ran until the end, Bill’s retirement doesn’t really look like retirement, and Michael and Jeff are still full at it. So in trying to emulate those guys, they aren’t exactly showing me a path to retirement. It’s hard to imagine retirement really. If I sit still for a few hours I instinctively start playing around with new business ideas and models. I guess my plan is to retire when that stops … maybe it won’t?
TALKIN CLOUD’s SPIN: Xbox?
