Apache Hadoop, the open source data management platform, is starting to connect in the managed services provider (MSP) market. An example: MetaScale is building a Hadoop managed services business practice to help customers address Big Data issues. Should smaller MSPs follow MetaScale’s Hadoop lead?MetaScale’s latest move involves a partnership with Cloudera, which provides Apache Hadoop-based data management software. According to MetaScale, the company’s Hadoop services include:
“building and configuring Hadoop clusters; operating, managing and monitoring the cluster; integrating with other data management technologies; running data-cleansing and other data management projects; writing and developing MapReduce applications; and custom solution design and system integration.”
Managed Database Services
MSPmentor has often suggested that MSPs should focus more on managed database services — where companies such as DSP Managed Services, NaviSite, Ntirety and Cloud Creek Systems come to mind.
But Hadoop seems to be a slightly different beast. Most massive technology companies — HP, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP, to name a few — have been unveiling Apache Hadoop strategies in recent months. And I suspect small business MSPs will need to give Hadoop a look as customers increasingly gather, manage and mine their data.
With those thoughts in mind, MSPs should keep a close eye on MetaScale and Cloudera.
