Ingram Micro and Tech Data: Dell PCs Today, Servers Tomorrow

Dell Vostro PCs at Ingram Micro, Tech DataIngram Micro and Tech Data have agreed to distribute selected Dell Vostro small business desktops and laptops, select Dell monitors and extended limited hardware warranties. Impressive. But The VAR Guy wonders: When  will Dell servers enter the distribution mix?

Sure, The VAR Guy should slow down and digest today’s news. It is, after all, major news that Dell has climbed into bed with Ingram and Tech Data. But if you pull down the sheets a little more — perhaps a few months from now — The VAR Guy suspects you’ll eventually find Dell servers somewhere under the covers.

The VAR Guy is asking Dell, Ingram and Tech Data whether such plans are under consideration. (Update, March 24, 5:30 p.m. eastern: Tech Data has confirmed those plans. See the comments section below for thoughts from both Tech Data and Ingram Micro.

In the meantime, Dell has launched  www.dell.com/partner/distribution to help partners see Dell’s lineup of products currently available through distribution.

Didn’t You Get the Memo?

According to an FAQ document that Dell has prepared for partners, the new distribution relationships offers:

“Flexibility. If you need a desktop, laptop, or monitor quickly, you now have another sourcing option. If you already have a relationship with Tech Data or Ingram Micro you can now add select Dell systems to our direct purchase order from them. This development does not change our relationship or your purchase options from Dell’s PartnerDirect channel.”

Interesting stuff. If you’d like to read the entire Dell-branded FAQ, here it is as a PDF download — direct from The VAR Guy, er, Dell.
