Apache Hadoop distributor MapR Technologies has appointed former Oracle (ORCL) executive Matt Mills as president and chief operating officer, as the company seeks to capture additional growth and expand its market leadership.
Mills will take on his new role immediately and will report to company co-founder and CEO John Schroeder.
“Matt brings an unparalleled level of industry knowledge and experience to the MapR business,” said Schroeder, in a statement. “We share a common vision of MapR’s future and as we continue to expand rapidly across industries worldwide, Matt’s leadership will help us maximize the significant opportunity ahead of us.”
Prior to his appointment at MapR, Mills served as senior vice president and general manager at Oracle, and also served as a member of the company’s Executive Committee, according to the announcement.
“MapR leads in the most exciting enterprise software market today, which is reminiscent of the early database wars, where my team competed quite successfully,” said Mills. “MapR technology offers a clear advantage and high value to customers, all of which underpins a strong, high-growth business model with a clear path to profitability. I’m thrilled to join the MapR leadership team as we embark on the next phase of accelerated growth.”
Mills offered some additional insight into his decision to leave Oracle in a recent interview with Fortune.
“When I joined Oracle, we were going through this whole evolution of moving to that next generation of platform,” said Mills. “And it strikes me that MapR is at a similar point in time in its evolution. Those are the things that I hope to be able to bring to the team.”
