Doug Jury, vice president of solution sales at Zadara Storage
Jury: I was a paperboy – the starting place of many a sales rep of my generation. My second job was working at a marina in New Hampshire, pumping gas and servicing boats on Lake Winnipesaukee. A dream job for a 10 year old.
The VAR Guy says: You must have seen some great looking ships working at that marina! And being able to work outside as a kid does sound like a dream come true.
Jury: I’m fairly reasonable in my car purchases, but I guess if I had a dream car, it would be a 1968 Mustang Shelby GT500. My first car was a ‘68 Mustang, but rather plain.
The VAR Guy says: Dream cars are all about extravagance! We bet the ’68 Mustang Shelby is a dream car of many car aficionados, so good pick!
Jury: Durango, Colorado. Great food, great people and amazing views. Did someone say microbrews?
The VAR Guy says: Now that sounds like an interesting vacation. You had us at microbrews.
Jury: "It’s your Ship" by Captain Michael Abrashoff. A must-read for anyone that manages a team.
The VAR Guy says: As the former commander of the USS Benfold, Captain Abrashoff definitely knows how to manage a crew, and he offers his advice for top-down management in one of the most fascinating leadership books published in the past several years.
Jury: A winter home right on the water in Florida, which we’re currently renovating – including all new bathrooms, kitchen and flooring. My wife and I have a thing for making our own.
We built our own log cabin and lived in it with our family of five for five years. We’ve renovated three other homes from the ground up including a 100-year-old Colonial with all the attendant fixes that go with age. I also build my own furniture, and make my own beer and wine. I’m like the shark that dies if it stops swimming – or rather, that can sleep while still paddling through some darkened cave.
The VAR Guy says: Wow, it sounds like you have a lot of great hobbies. Just don’t drink the wine while working with power tools!
Jury: “The Big Bang Theory,” “Survivor,” and “NCIS.” That Gibbs – love him.
The VAR Guy says: We love “The Big Bang Theory” too! Sheldon and Leonard are our favorite TV nerds.
Jury: I wanted to be an engineer – which is where I began my career. After 15 years I went to the dark side of sales and never looked back. My dad was my biggest inspiration and mentor in that regard. He worked his way up from a tool and die machinist to become plant manager in charge of 350 people, and later on to sales and sales management for his own company. He had saying that “you are your journey.” I tell my teams that a lot. Everything you do becomes your DNA. We all evolve, every day, every job, every project. So pick wisely.
The VAR Guy says: Very inspirational words, sir. It sounds like you had a very good role model, and you’ve been able to become one for your own employees.
Jury: "Apollo 13." So many great lines and amazing problem-solving challenges. Astronaut Jim Lovell shows the world how to remain calm in the midst of chaos. I try to manage as he did in the movie.
The VAR Guy says: This was a wonderful movie, directed by the masterful Ron Howard. Who would have thought the kid who played Opie would make such a fantastic director?
