Hope McCluskey, Director of Channel Marketing, ESET
McCluskey: My first job was a lifeguard/swim instructor at my hometown beach of Framingham, Massachusetts.
The VAR Guy says: Saving lives and protecting swimmers is a heck of a first job! We bet you got a great tan, too.
McCluskey: My dream car is a Mazda Miata stick shift. Nothing too fancy, just a car where I can jump in and take off. Top down, and off I go.
The VAR Guy says: Simple, yet elegant. Who doesn't like a nice drop-top for summer driving?
McCluskey: Seattle with my family. Each day somebody got to plan the day, pick the activity, restaurants, etc. It was fun to see what each person chose. From the Blue Angels air show to a flight around the islands, to a six-course, really expensive meal (my older son is a foodie).
The VAR Guy says: That sounds like a really fun trip! It must have been amazing to see the Blue Angels as well, and who doesn't love a fancy meal?
McCluskey: Right now I am going to say “The First 90 Days,” by Michael Watkins. I just started a new career and found it incredibly helpful to understand cultural differences in the workplace. It taught me how critical it is in the first days to listen, ask lots of questions and observe before making judgments or making the fatal mistake of saying, “Oh, I’ve done that before and here’s how to fix it.”
The VAR Guy says: Boy, we wish we knew about this book when we were first starting out. Author and business professor Michael Watkins also co-authored, "Right From the Start: Taking Charge in a New Leadership Role," and has cemented himself as a master of helping executives to adjust to new roles and find their groove in unfamiliar territory.
McCluskey: That is a tough one for me. I am really practical AND I am a bargain shopper. I recently gave my son my Lexus with 150,000 miles on it. I then started looking and my practical side said, buy the cheaper Lexus but at the last minute I went for the GS 350 with all the bells and whistles. For me, this was a big splurge!
The VAR Guy says: At least you chose a really nice car to splurge on! Plus, after having your previous car, you know you'll be able to get a lot of use out of this one.
McCluskey: I shouldn’t admit this but someone started talking about "American Horror Story." I am hooked—into season 2 and find myself saying, "Just one more episode."
The VAR Guy says: This show is terrifying! We watched most of the seasons but haven't started watching the latest episodes because they center around a haunted hotel. With all the traveling The VAR Guy does, he doesn't want to hear about any haunted hotels!
McCluskey: I definitely wanted to be an ice skater, followed by singer and talk show host. I have a flair for drama and like to be in front of people, so any way I could.
The VAR Guy says: At least you aren't afraid of public speaking! You have to be pretty confident to want to take on even one of those roles, let alone all three. Kudos to you.
McCluskey: “Terms of Endearment.” I love to see the real side of people, dysfunction and all. If you watch the subtlety of the characters, it is brilliant. The relationships between the characters and the humor in the normal day drama of life. I think I have watched it at least 20 times. True love!
The VAR Guy says: We've never seen this one, probably because it looks to sad and The VAR Guy hates to cry during movies. Tears can be tough to clean out of your tie, you know …
