Microsoft and GE Healthcare have joined forces on a new joint venture for 2012 called Caradigm. What is Caradigm, and how will it shape the healthcare industry? VARs focused on the healthcare vertical should definitely give this soon-to-be born company a look over …

Caradigm will focus primarily on delivering healthcare software technology that makes everyday life easier. Microsoft offers this explanation: “[Caradigm will enable] health systems and professions to use real-time, systemwide intelligence to improve healthcare quality.” The 50-50 venture between the two companies is fascinating, especially since both already have a focus in healthcare solutions. GE Healthcare obviously has centered around this vertical, while Microsoft has aimed at the market more quietly with HealthVault and associated technologies.

So what will the new duo focus on with Caradigm? Software developed from the company will ensure “better population health management to improve outcomes and the economics of health and wellness.” Translation? Better patient management means more efficient, high-grade and cost-effective care. This isn’t a new idea, but Microsoft and GE Healthcare promise they will bring forth information integration that enables a new level of ubiquity, helping healthcare personnel to be more intimately involved in patient care. The rest of Microsoft’s press release outlines the C-Level corporate structure of the company, and of course, offers disclaimers about the company’s formation, which is pending “regulatory approval.” I’m hesitant to speculate on much of anything else until the company is actually formed.

Important to note: This isn’t the only healthcare-centric move by big-name companies. HP recently joined forces with Central Logic for integrating healthcare software into HP hardware solutions. If you’re currently working the healthcare vertical, it looks like all corners of the technology world are gearing up, especially as mobile devices find their way into hospital care.
