Palm Inc. (PALM) has introduced Treo Pro, a smartphone with a streamlined design and Palm shortcuts layered on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. It offers e-mail, Wi-Fi and GPS capabilities.

The use of Windows Mobile 6.1 provides increased security, easier device management and access to information for IT managers. Treo Pro’s thin design blends a high-resolution color touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard with a removable battery that packs up to five hours of talk time. The device features dedicated e-mail and calendar buttons, as well as a one-touch Wi-Fi button that allows easy and fast Wi-Fi connections (802.11 b/g).

Businesses can use Treo Pro to deploy a secure, low-cost infrastructure for a mobile workforce, and can utilize Microsoft Direct Push Technology, which allows a direct connection to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 or 2007 to give users up-to-date e-mail, contacts and calendars. And the high-speed UMTS/HSDPA network capabilities enable Treo Pro as a solution for international companies.

Treo Pro will be available in the United States in the fall through the Palm online store as well as select Internet, retail and enterprise resellers for a suggested retail price of $549. The U.S. version is unlocked and unsubsidized, giving end users the ability to insert their existing active SIM card and immediately start using the Treo Pro without a new contract.
