All businesses create data and rely on it to remain successful and vibrant. And protecting that data is critical for the business to function without interruption. No data, no business. Backing up your data means protecting your business today and in the future. It means avoiding data losses and downtime.
According to the findings of the recently released EMC Global Data Protection Index (GDPI), businesses are losing as much as $1.7 trillion through data losses and unplanned downtime. That’s right: U.S. $1,700,000,000,000.00. No matter how you look at it, that figure represents a lot of aggravation, disappointment, heartache, headache and loss, which includes customers, future opportunities, time (which does, of course, also represents financial losses) and maybe even the entire business.
The GDPI found that of those global businesses that participated in the study, organizations large and small are losing money as the result of data loss and unplanned downtime. During the past 12 months, 64 percent of those organizations that were part of the study experienced data loss or unplanned downtime; 49 percent experienced unplanned downtime; 32 percent experienced data loss; and 17 percent experienced data loss and downtime.
According to the study, the estimated annual cost for disruptions worldwide is $754 billion for data loss and $954 billion for downtime. With those kinds of financial losses, it would seem that no one is safe from data loss and downtime. And although no business can predict every possible disaster, businesses can—with a clearly defined data protection strategy that includes backing up their data—prevent data loss disruptions.
Businesses large and small need to ensure that there’s an appropriate data protection solution in place for all of their data, no matter where it is or how it is generated. They need to ensure there is a level of visibility, control of the data, and clear understanding of who owns data protection for the business.
Data value continues to increase. As such, we need to see it for what it is: a significant asset of the business that merits every bit of protection available. Even a short period of downtime can cause significant losses to a business.
Data is everyone’s business. And protecting and backing up that data is an important part of your business.
