MSPs: One Way to Overhaul Your Website
October 7, 2009
You’re a talented MSP — but your company has a lame Web site. That’s where Squarespace comes in. Founded in 2003, Squarespace is a very powerful and simple to use web design editor and hosting service that requires zero knowledge of HTML or CSS to create professional-grade websites and blogs — just a mouse and a dream.
Of course, you can edit code by hand, too. Their backend makes it a snap to drag and drop in photo galleries, videos, even podcasts, and every site gets an RSS and Atom feed, not to mention actually post blog entries and site updates.
Money Matters
While they have an $8/month “Basic” package, most MSPs will probably want to start at the $14/month “Pro” package, which lets you use a custom URL, 2GB of server storage, and 125 gigabytes of bandwidth. They have additional tiers at the $20, $30, $40, and $50 a month price points.
Notably, however, you only get SSL security at the highest two tiers, so tread carefully if you actually plan to communicate sensitive information over your shiny new site but don’t want to shell out the cash for their most elite plans.
Apart from their design and content editor, what separates Squarespace from free blog services like, well, Blogger?
“We offer expert level, 24 hour support with response times to most inquiries around 15 minutes,” says Squarespace’s Stephen Parker. “Additionally, the type of redundant, clustered hosting that we offer literally couldn’t be purchased for less than thousands of dollars per month elsewhere. We won’t release a feature until we feel 100% satisfied with it. And, if there is ever an issue — we’ll fix it.”
One word of warning: Apparently, Squarespace doesn’t offer phone support (yet). My e-mails to them were always answered in a flash, but if you like hearing another human voice when you need something, they may not be for you.
