Atlantic.Net Targets Startups with 99-Cent Server

Cloud virtual private server hosting provider Atlantic.Net is looking to attract more startup customers with the launch of its "aggressively priced" Go plan, which offers cloud-based servers for 99 cents.

The server includes a 256MB Linux or FreeBSD cloud virtual private server, 10GB of solid state disk (SSD) storage and 1TB of outbound bandwidth (along with unlimited inbound bandwidth). The company has also included A+B redundant power on each server, enterprise-class SSDs, RAID redundant storage, multiple Internet uplinks and optional backup services.

The low price tag may appeal to a variety of customers, but Atlantic.Net's focus is on serving early stage and "bootstrapped" startups, as well as indie developers. According to the company, the low entry cost available through the Go plan encourages developers to use the cloud for development.

"When we started our business, the concept of the Internet was largely a dream. Similarly, we want to inspire developers to tinker, toy, and imagine the next big thing," said Marty Puranik, founder and CEO of Atlantic.Net, in a prepared statement. "We want to invest in our customers to help them get going with their ideas while at the same time growing the cloud market 10 times and making this a global phenomenon."

The Go plan was also designed to provide per-second billing with no term commitment, providing customers with the ability to get up and running in 30 seconds but also avoid getting locked in to the Atlantic.Net cloud. Add-ons for the cloud-based server offering are also available. They include additional IPs, backup, DNS, SSH keys, multiple server locations and 40Gbps Infiniband networking.

Atlantic.Net also noted in its announcement that as startups grow, the Go plan is tailored to make it simple to scale up or add more capacity.
