Centrify Links Mobile Device Management (MDM) to Active Directory
May 30, 2012
Centrify, a provider of centrally-controlled security and compliance solutions and maker of Active Directory, announced the general availability of Centrify DirectControl for Mobile. The cloud-based service addresses BYOD (bring your own device) issues by allowing enterprises to secure and manage smart phones and tablets, such as iPads and Android devices, using existing Active Directory infrastructure and processes. The company also announced the general availability of Centrify Express for Mobile, a free mobile security service for Android and Apple devices without a limit on the number of devices supported.
Both DirectControl for Mobile and Centrify Express for Mobile, according to the press release, provide integration with a customer’s on-premise Active Directory (AD) infrastructure and Group Policy-based management tools to update and enforce mobile security settings. The solution enables administrators to assign devices to users and manage the associated properties and settings for each device. When used with Centrify’s leading DirectControl for Mac OS X offering, organizations can acquire control over authentication and security policy enforcement for Apple products in their environment without deploying a new infrastructure and dealing with another management console.
According to Centrify, the features of both new mobile offerings include:
Cloud Service. A multi-tenant cloud service that allows the on-premise Active Directory environment to manage mobile devices over a secure connection, whether or not a device is connected to the corporate network, thereby making deployment simple and eliminating the need for new infrastructure.
Cloud Proxy Server. An on-premise software suite running as a Windows service and which facilitates secure communication via https from an organization’s Active Directory to the Centrify Cloud Service.
Cloud Management Suite. A collection of downloadable Windows management tools that include the Centrify Cloud Proxy Server, as well as Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) and Group Policy Object Editor (GPOE) extensions for support of mobile devices.
Mobile Manager. An optional mobile application that runs on Apple and Android mobile devices which can detect rooted/jail-broken devices and facilitates an automated enrollment process of mobile devices joining a customer’s Active Directory domain; a web enrollment page is an optional method for customers.
Last June, Talkin’ Cloud covered Centrify’s move to put its Active Directory management in the cloud, which we viewed as a positive step for VAR’s and resellers.
