Cloud solution provider 8×8 has announced the acquisition of Colorado-based Zerigo Inc., enabling the company to add virtual private servers, managed DNS services and monitoring tools for cloud-based servers to its portfolio – as well as a relationship with Salesforce.com-owned PaaS provider Heroku. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The major benefit of the acquisition, according to the press release, is the enhanced provisioning and elasticity it brings to 8×8’s cloud compute services. To wit, here’s what 8×8 Chairman and CEO Bryan Martin had to say about the deal in a prepared statement:

“We are excited to make Zerigo’s existing technologies available to our customers and plan to extend them to our enterprise-class private cloud and VMware offerings. The Zerigo acquisition will significantly advance our research and development activities in this area.”

As for the other services Zerigo brings to the table, 8×8 is promoting the cloud servers as a way to improve its SMB play by complementing its existing VoIP and communications services.

According to the release, Zerigo’s former CEO Tom Morgan will be staying on as 8×8’s newly appointed chief architect, and the company’s staff will be refocusing efforts on cloud offering research and development.

This seems to be the year of the cloud acquisition. Who will be left standing when it’s all said and done? TalkinCloud will be watching for clues.
