10gen, which develops a NoSQL database called MongoDB, has closed a $42 million financing round led by New Enterprise Associates, with participation from existing investors Sequoia Capital, Flybridge Capital Partners and Union Square Ventures. 10gen plans to use the new capital to further develop MongoDB; for its MongoDB Monitoring Service (MMS); and also to support its growing user community.

Non-relational database MongoDB is the most widespread NoSQL database, with prominent use in sectors such as telecom, financial services, media, government and technology. 10gen has seen 50 percent quarter-over-quarter sales growth over the last five quarters, and has expanded its workforce by more than 400 percent since January of 2011 (though we don't have exact revenue or headcount figures). With this investment round, total 10gen funding has reached $73 million.

"We want to change the database market, to make MongoDB the best way for companies to build new applications," said Dwight Merriman, CEO of 10gen, in the press release. "Our goal is to give tech teams not only a database that scales to any big data level required but also helps developers be productive and more nimble. That has been the vision of the MongoDB open source community and we want to continue to help make that happen."

In April 2012, 10gen took part as a vendor in the launch of Amazon’s AWS Marketplace, an online app store that was designed to give customers one-click access to software and technical services for creating products and running businesses. Also in April 2012, Red Hat and 10gen partnered to provide MongoDB across Red Hat offerings such as the Enterprise Linux OS, PaaS OpenShift and JBoss Middleware application. The move built on 10gen’s prior NoSQL database support for Red Hat’s OpenShift.
