Dropbox Paper Launches Public Beta for Quickie Cloud Collaboration

If you work as part of a remote team, you know how difficult it can be to all be on the same page – pun intended – during a brainstorming session without relying on one person taking notes and sharing it post-meeting. Dropbox is trying to fix that with its launch of Dropbox Paper.

Dropbox Paper has been launched into open beta on Wednesday, inviting users to try out its collaborative document application for free – and without having to add their name to a waitlist. It has also launched apps for iOS and Android.

Dropbox announced Paper in October for teams to use to share notes and brainstorm in real-time on a virtual paper that allows users to embed videos, and files from Google and Dropbox. Since opening it up to a limited number of beta users, more than one million Paper documents have been created.

The launch comes several months after Dropbox launched Project Infinite –  which allows users to access all their Dropbox files from the desktop, regardless of how much space they have on their hard drives.

Incorporating the feedback it gathered during its limited beta, Dropbox Paper has added “enhanced tables and image galleries; desktop, web, and mobile notifications; and powerful search to help you quickly find the docs you need.”

Dropbox Paper is not intended to replace cloud collaboration suites from the likes of Google or Microsoft, but rather as a way for teams to quickly and easily collaborate on new ideas. It likely appeals most to companies who are already using Dropbox for file-sharing and have already integrated the app into their workflow.

Currently Dropbox Paper mobile apps are only available in the U.S. with users in the EU able to access them soon. Dropbox said this is “just the beginning” for Dropbox Paper, so we’ll be sure to watch the space as more features are added.
