A new survey from Gigaom Research and North Bridge Venture Partners showed more companies have adopted software-as-a-service (SaaS) over the past few years.

The fourth annual “Future of Cloud Computing” survey revealed SaaS adoption rose from 13 percent in 2011 to 74 percent this year.

Researchers also noted 56 percent of businesses are using infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) technologies to harness elastic computing resources, and 41 percent are leveraging platform-as-a-service (PaaS) tools to develop and test new applications.

“With four years of data, we’re now really beginning to see some interesting trends, such as the five-fold increase in SaaS adoption to 74 percent and the nearly six-fold increase in PaaS adoption to 41 percent,” Michael Skok, general partner at North Bridge Venture Partners, said in a prepared statement.

Other survey results included:

  • Survey respondents named agility, cost and scalability as the top three drivers for cloud adoption.

  • Nearly 67 percent of respondents said they believed they would move their data to the cloud over the next two years.

  • 49 percent said they were concerned about data security in the cloud.

  • 49 percent said they are using the cloud to create new products or increase their revenues.

  • 45 percent said they already, or plan to, run their company from the cloud.

Gigaom Research Vice President David Card commented on the survey results:

“This wave of cloud computing that’s revenue and new-business driven is good news for long-suffering IT execs. If they can offload tedious but necessary cost-center functions, and refocus resources on cloud-driven new business, they might be able to retake their seat at the C-table.”

Survey researchers analyzed the inhibitors and drivers behind cloud adoption across a sample of 1,358 respondents.
