If you’re going to find a “truly green” cloud solution, then it’s probably little surprise that it’s from Northern Europe. Unveiled this week at Cloud Expo Europe in London, QStack is a hybrid cloud software stack designed to enable enterprises to build private clouds and then scale and migrate workloads to a clean, renewable energy-powered public cloud hosted by Reykjavik, Iceland-based GreenQloud.
QStack was designed to enable a hybrid cloud environment, whereby enterprises build private clouds using the software stack and then burst into GreenQloud’s public cloud infrastructure. The company is touting its benefits as easy-to-use and easy-to-implement software, which is good for enterprises, but could also be useful for midsized businesses interested in building out a private cloud of their own with bursting capabilities.
The company is demonstrating its green technologies at Cloud Expo Europe. Exactly how it will roll out its QStack offering in the market is a bit of an unknown. In its announcement, GreenQloud noted working with customers directly, but it seems that if the company wanted to, it could roll out in a bigger—and quicker—way using the channel and existing cloud services providers.
In the end, what GreenQloud is trying to provide is a sustainable and practical hybrid cloud model. Coming at it from both sides of the cloud coin makes a lot of sense. It’s not out of the ordinary, of course, but combining public and private cloud options with green technology is sure to attract a fair number of potential customers, many of which have been building out green practices over the last few years.
QStack is built on Apache CloudStack and has additional open source components such as the KVM hypervisor, but it also supports third-party commercial software from vendors including VMware (VMW) and Scalability.
