Hadoop Firm Cloudera Joins with IBM on Big Data Initiative
April 27, 2012
Apache Hadoop specialist Cloudera and good ol’ “Big Blue” IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced a partnership to integrate Cloudera’s Distribution Including Apache Hadoop (CDH) and Cloudera Manager with IBM’s Big Data platform. Their objective, as stated in the release, is to “deliver a world-class solution that enables organizations across sectors to harness the transformative power of Big Data analytics.”
“Big Data is more than a challenge; it is an opportunity to find insight in new and emerging types of data, to make your business more agile, and to answer questions that, in the past, were beyond reach,” said Rob Thomas, IBM VP of Business Development, in a prepared statement. “IBM’s platform for Big Data uses technologies like Hadoop to open the door to a world of possibilities, and by partnering with Cloudera, we are empowering our customers with more choices when deploying this game-changing technology.”
According to Cloudera and IBM, their partnership provides customers with the following benefits:
IBM BigInsights will run on CDH and Cloudera Manager, providing high performance, scalability and platform extensibility.
A complete Hadoop platform and BI capabilities (BigSheets, text analytics)
Connectors to IBM Netezza, IBM DB2, IBM InfoSphere Warehouse and IBM Smart Analytics System.
Both Cloudera and IBM were on the Big Data news ticker this week: Cloudera released the public beta of its 4.0 Distribution Including Apache Hadoop, with a focus on increased security and improved extensibility for high availability and Big Data environments, while IBM acquired data discovery and navigation firm Vivisimo for an undisclosed sum. Big Blue put its own Big Data efforts front and center in its announcement: The acquisition “accelerates IBM’s Big Data analytics initiatives” by enabling enterprises “to access, navigate and analyze the full variety, velocity and volume of structured and unstructured data without having to move it.”
