IBM Touts Newest SmartCloud IaaS Customers

IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced new partners for its year-old IaaS initiative, SmartCloud. Keen to portray SmartCloud as a “leading enterprise cloud platform for business,” IBM noted 1 million enterprise application users are on the IBM cloud, running more than $100 billion in commercial transactions per year and 4.5 million client transactions daily.

“Companies are starting to understand that cloud is more than just about gaining efficiencies and cost savings, it’s about driving the kind of fundamental innovation that provides lasting marketplace advantage,” said Paul Loftus, GM of IBM Global Technology Services, in a prepared statement. “We are helping all kinds of clients manage enterprise applications and processes in the cloud as well as leverage new cloud centric applications while meeting their unique requirements for governance, security and portability.”

New IBM SmartCloud customers include:

  • TopCoder Inc.:  The world’s biggest Open Innovation Community of digital developers has decided to move its 400,000-strong community to IBM SmartCloud Enterprise. TopCoder provides application and mobile development, user experience, graphic design and Big Data project work via its worldwide community of developers.

  • Ogilvy & Mather: The prestigious advertising and public relations company hired IBM to update its IT environment. IBM is currently moving Ogilvy from its legacy environment to SmartCloud for SAP Applications hosted at its data center in North Carolina. The solution, according to IBM, offers scalability and short-term resource use for development projects.

  • OTRUM: A provider of interactive TV content to the hospitality industry, OTRUM has completely migrated all its digital signage clients to SmartCloud Enterprise, eliminating hundreds of servers at customer locations and allowing for centralized control and distribution of data. OTRUM also uses the IBM Cognos analytics software for marketing campaigns and deliver analysis to 500 customer hotels.

IBM launched SmartCloud in April 2011 as an enterprise-class, secure managed cloud services platform that was meant to bring the best of the public and private cloud models together into a model meeting customer needs. This past February, IBM reached out to is partner base with a new set of resources designed to help them connect with the SmartCloud platform, including customer connection initiatives, educational outreach, a social business application toolkit and a new entry-level reference configuration for IBM SmartCloud.
