At the Monday morning vision keynote session, Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, gathered with two other industry CEOs – SAP’s Bill McDermott and Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen – to elaborate on the Open Data Initiative that will eliminate data silos and drive customer engagement.
“The real challenge is to bring all of this data together so that companies are in control, unlocking the true potential of all customer data for every brand out there,” Nadella said.
There was a Diversity & Tech pre-day conference, in addition to other sessions and lunch panel options.
Here, after the kickoff of Ignite, was the packed Diversity and Tech Empower Lunch panel entitled, “Voices from the Top: Leaders Get Real About Building Inclusive Work Cultures.”
Panelists talked about women in tech, but also gender identities/LGBTQ, ethnicity and race/culture, as well as accessibility and inclusive technology.
While attendees lined up to take a shot at Cohesity’s prize board, they also had the opportunity to attend several Cohesity sessions that talked about how customers can simplify and modernize secondary data and applications on a platform that natively integrates with Microsoft Azure.
Lenovo made some announcements at the conference including that it joined the Microsoft Azure Cloud Solutions Provider Program and it began reselling Azure services in the U.S., as a first step of a broader as-a-service initiative.
The vendor launched ThinkAgile MX Certified Notes to accelerate the adoption of Microsoft Windows Service Software-Defined (WSSD) solutions; it announced the Lenovo Data Center Buyback Program on Microsoft Windows Server, SQL Server and CALs; and announced support for Windows Admin Center with Lenovo XClarity Software.
Attendees looking for a time out at Envision put on a HoloLens and enjoyed a mixed reality experience. Created with the Smithsonian magazine, “Defying Gravity: Women in Space” takes guests through time and women’s contributions to space exploration.
There were more than 100 expert-led and self-paced workshops, running all day, every day. Whether attendees were interested in certifications or hands-on learning, it was there for the taking.
Microsoft and partner HPE go way back – 30 years. In addition to being able to see technologies such as HPE ProLiant for Microsoft Azure Stack, HPE OneView, HPE OneSphere, HPE SimpliVity, and the HPE Developer Community, the vendor also scheduled sessions for attendees such as HPE Edgeline and Microsoft Azure Powering the Intelligent Edge.
Brad Smith, president and chief legal officer at Microsoft, had a chat with comedian Trevor Noah at the Envision closing keynote.
The audience learned about Noah’s path to becoming host of The Daily Show, including his days as a DJ and his fondness for technology. Smith asked Noah about diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
“It’s not charity,” he said.

Microsoft Ignite 2018, the company’s big event for IT pros and enterprise developers, attracted more than 26,000 attendees from more than 100 countries. The conference was held in conjunction with Microsoft Envision for IT decision makers.
The company made numerous announcements that targeted security, AI and data, and IoT and edge computing — all critical technologies for digital transformation. There were more than 700 deep-dive sessions and 100-plus expert-led and self-paced workshops for attendees.
And, when in Orlando … Microsoft held its Ignite Attendee Celebration at two Universal Orlando Resort theme parks. Did you miss it? Well, it’s not too soon to plan for next year: Microsoft Ignite, Nov. 4-8, 2019, again in Orlando.
