Cloud messaging and hosted Microsoft Exchange solution provider Intermedia is extending its much-touted HostPilot Control Panel to Apple iPhone and Android 2.1 smartphone users, with an attendant “My Services” app for end users.

With the new HostPilot Control Panel app, according to Intermedia, IT pros can do common tasks while away from their desks, including:

  • Creating new Exchange mailboxes

  • Resetting passwords

  • Wiping a user’s mobile device

  • Adding or removing users from a distribution list

  • Enabling OCS, Online Backup or BlackBerry

  • Accepting or rejecting users’ service requests

  • Backing up a mailbox (with PST Manager)

  • Checking service status notifications

With the “My Services” mobile app, end users at organizations who have gone to Intermedia-delivered cloud services such as Microsoft Lync instant messaging or Microsoft Exchange messaging can change settings including their contact information, photo, passwords and out-of-office auto reply. It also has a setup wizard for getting Exchange up and running on the iPhone.

Intermedia President Michael Gold, in a prepared statement, offered some insight on why the company’s service provider partners should care about My Services:

“[We] hear often from IT managers that they’re spending too much time configuring users’ mobile devices – or helping those users adjust basic settings like passwords. Mobile My Services was built to solve issues like these. The app provides a simple way for users to get the job done when they’re on the go. IT managers and other account administrators like it because it’s secure and frees up their time for higher value work.”

Borrowing a phrase from marketing executives the industry over, this app offers a new way for Intermedia partners to delight their customers.

Intriguingly, neither the HostPilot nor My Services apps work with Intermedia’s new Microsoft Office 365 cloud services; these are exclusively for the somewhat more traditional hosted messaging services the company provides.
