Competition in the backup and recovery market continues to intensify. The latest example involves LabTech Software launching a so-called LT Backup platform for managed services providers. Here are the details. Plus, a hint about where the next major online backup trends may unfold for MSPs.

LabTech, as you may recall, is a remote monitoring and management (RMM) software developer that attracted investment money from ConnectWise Capital in Q1 2010. Now, Labtech is promoting LT Backup, a “fully integrated backup and disaster recovery tool, to make it easy to deploy, automate and manage client backup and recovery.” The backup software is available now as a monthly SaaS licensing model.

I’m checking to see if LabTech developed the backup software on its own, or if LabTech licensed the software from a third-party.

No doubt, online backup and business continuity are low hanging fruit for MSPs that want to find recurring revenue opportunities. We continue to watch the market closely, and we expect some potential surprises at the HostingCon conference (July 19-21, Austin, Texas).

Managed Backup and Managed Hosting Converge

First, a quick disclosure: The VAR Guy (our sister site) is a media partner for HostingCon. That doesn’t mean I personally “endorse” the event. But our editorial team is starting to hear from a range of backup companies that are seeking to work closely with MSPs and hosting providers.

The chatter suggests that hosting and managed services continue to converge. On prime example: Vembu, a backup company that frequently works with MSPs, reached out to me this morning about potentially meeting at HostingCon.

I intend to be there. And I’ll be exploring the potential convergence of online backup, managed services and major hosting providers.
