Progress Adds Connectivity, App Development Features to aPaaS

The company has added new features and capabilities around data connectivity and application development to its recently launched Progress Pacific aPaaS offering.

Progress Software is hoping to make it even easier for application developers and ISVs to develop business applications on demand using its application platform as a service (aPaaS). The company has added new features and capabilities around data connectivity and application development to its recently launched Progress Pacific aPaaS offering.
According to Progress, the new features make it possible for anyone to rapidly create, evolve and customize connected business applications on demand. By “anyone,” let’s assume the company is referring to skilled and trained software developers, not just anybody off the street (but if cloud app development is becoming that easy, maybe a career change is in order).
The new features include:
The addition of Progress DataDirect Cloud, a service that was designed to enable apps to easily integrate data from SaaS, relational database, Big Data, social, CRM and ERP systems. That’s a tall order, but if the new data connectivity features do what Progress says they do, then that’s pulling together a lot of data for access by cloud apps. According to Progress, this is all done with a single standards-based interface that executes SQL queries against a variety of cloud-based data sources.
New business process management (BPM) and business rules management systems (BRMS) capabilities that simplify application customization using Progress OpenEdge 11.3 development software. The new application development features include flexible processes, rules and workflows that, according to the company, can be easily configured to business requirements. Additionally, Progress rolled out enhancements to its Progress Rollbase infrastructure to ensure a better end-user experience for standards-based business apps created with its drag-and-drop tools.
“Customer and partner response to the Progress Pacific launch in June has been extremely positive and we are now delivering on our vision,” said John Goodson, Progress Software’s chief product officer, in a prepared statement. “It’s clear that the move to aPaaS is gaining momentum as time-to-market and data capabilities in new apps are key requirements for developers and end users. Pacific addresses these needs with rich data, visual design and open deployment capabilities in a single platform.”
Progress launched Pacific in June as a development platform that makes it simpler for connected apps to integrate with real-time data from multiple sources. At the time, Pacific was in beta, but now the aPaaS has gone into general availability.
