In some pockets of IT, thin clients coupled with virtualization are all the rage. The latest example involves Devone IT, an “alternative desktop computing” company that has launched a thin client leveraging XenDesktop and Citrix technology. Here are the potential implications for VARs.

Dubbed the TC5X, Devon IT has outfitted this little guy with an Intel Atom CPU and at 1.6GHz and it’s capable of running dual-DVI displays. It’s Energy Star Certified and available with Windows Embedded Standard 2009, which of course, supports XenApp and XenDesktop.

The little black box gets the Citrix HDX Ready designation, which means it works with all the special features we spoke about not too long ago:

“TC5X provides an excellent experience for demanding users who require multi-monitor support, high-definition video and use high throughput devices such as VOIP headsets. Working together XenDesktop and the Citrix HDX Ready TC5X deliver a high-definition user experience and expand the ability of companies and organizations to offer virtual desktops to a wide variety of users,” said John Fanelli, VP, community and solutions marketing at Citrix, in a prepared statement.

HDX is Citrix technology that enables real-time high-quality streaming and virtualization of apps direct to the box, in conjunction with USB devices. The press release will give you all the marketing jazz.

You might be wondering what the price tag is? Google Shopping shows an average of $400, which seems a little high for a thin-client. Devon IT’s own site doesn’t say, but it could be significantly cheaper if you’re working as a partner or in the channel.
