Linux Foundation Announces LinuxCon, CloudOpen Chicago

Keynotes from executives at Cisco Systems (CSCO), IBM (IBM), edX and others, along with a Linux Quiz Show, Comic Book Hero Contest and workshops to promote women within open source development, are on the agenda for the LinuxCon and CloudOpen event next month, whose details the Linux Foundation has now revealed.

The event, which is co-located with the Linux Kernel Summit, the Linux Security Summit, #MesosCon, the OpenDaylight Mini-Summit, the UEFI Mini-Summit and the Xen Project Developer Summit, takes place Aug. 20-22 at the Chicago Sheraton. As the flagship annual convention of the Linux Foundation, it will bring together representatives of an array of different groups within the Linux and open source ecosystem, from developers to industry partners to simple penguin enthusiasts.

The Linux Foundation has not yet announced the complete keynote lineup, but it has confirmed the following speakers and topics:

  • Michael Enescu, CTO of open source initiatives at Cisco, "Linux is the Single Best Tech for IoT"

  • Anthony Moschella, vice president at Makerbot, "Makerbot Offers Lessons in Open Source Innovation with Linux"

  • Imad Sousou, vice president of Software and Services Group and General Mangaer, Intel Open Source Technology Center, "The Future of Linux and Intel in the New, Connected World"

Also speaking will be edX CEO Anant Agarwal, IBM's Douglas Balog, HP's Eileen Evans, Docker founder Solomon Hykes, Open Prosthetics Project's Jonathan Kuniholm, Local Motors' Jay Rogers, Linux creator Linus Torvalds and Jim Zemlin of the Linux Foundation.

In addition, the Linux Foundation has released some information about the workshops that will take place at the event, which "will cover technical topics such as 'Linux as a Networking Platform' presented by Cumulus Networks and a Container Sprint organized by LXC Maintainers." It will also include "important workshops on women in open source and diversity in the community with an Ally Skills Workshop presented by the Ada Initiative and a Women's Resume Writing Workshop presented by Leslie Hawthorn of Elasticsearch." And Jono Bacon, former Community Manager at Canonical and now Director of Community at XPRIZE, will lead a Community Management Workshop.

Last but not least, the Linux Foundation will complement the technical forums at the event with some community-building fun in the form of a Linux Quiz Show, a Comic Book Hero Contest and a 5K Linux Fun Run—all of which should help to prove that open source developers not only write better software, but also have more fun (and more stamina, I suppose, if enough show up for the 5K).
