Openbravo — maker of open source ERP (enterprise resource planning) and POS (point of sale) software — is taking a bow. The company, which is approaching 100 channel partners, says its ERP and POS software together have generated more than 1 million downloads. But are businesses really running open source ERP and POS? The VAR Guy sure thinks so.
In recent months, The VAR Guy has noticed a growing number of readers visiting this site and viewing past coverage of Openbravo. The new IT channel, it seems, is increasingly willing to break free from closed source solutions.
Openbravo claims its software has landed in a range of industries including manufacturing, logistics and distribution, public administration, retail and services across the globe. On a monthly basis Openbravo ERP now exceeds 36,000 downloads (an annual run rate of 432,000) and Openbravo POS stands at 7,000 per month (84,000 annually).
At the same time, Openbravo has been expanding its partner network. The company is approaching 100 VARs and channel partners, up from 35 last year.
Challenges Ahead?
That all sounds great. But what could hold Openbravo back? Alas, The VAR Guy doesn’t know how many customers actually pay for Openbravo’s software. And Microsoft continues to bolster its various ERP offerings in small business. Oh, and don’t forget that Windows competes quite successfully against Linux on point-of-sale store systems.
Still, Openbravo has transformed itself from a nobody into a somebody in less than a year. The VAR Guy noticed. So too have nearly 100 partners.
