Red Hat (RHT) has highlighted the transition from Unix platforms to open source Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) in awarding the 2014 Red Hat Certified Professional of the Year Award. The recognition goes this year to Jorge Juarez Acevedo of Banco Azteca, who oversaw the bank's migration from Sun Solaris, HP UX and AIX servers to RHEL.
Acevedo is an IT manager at Banco Azteca, one of the largest financial institutions in Latin America. He began working with RHEL four years ago, according to Red Hat, when the bank sought to consolidate an IT environment that was based on several different kinds of Unix—including Sun (now Oracle) Solaris, HP UX and IBM AIX—to a standardized and fully open source platform running RHEL.
The Certified Professional of the Year Award recognizes Acevedo's use of various Red Hat certifications in overseeing that transition, as well as in moving a variety of application server tools that were scattered across different types of environments to a Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform deployment. Acevedo holds Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Red Hat Certified Virtualization Administrator (RHCVA), and Red Hat Certified Datacenter Specialist (RHCDS) certifications.
That Acevedo's introdcution to RHEL came only four years ago, and he gained all of his certifications in a short time, makes his an especially compelling case for Red Hat to choose to highlight with this year's award—which recognizes "ingenuity, hard work, and expertise" in the way IT professionals use their Red Hat certifications, according to the company.
Red Hat has been issuing the Certified Professional of the Year awards for several years now. Last year's award went to Rafael Guimares of the Brazilian energy company Petrobras.
