EMC is unveiling this week a new storage system designed to serve as a next-generation video surveillance platform.

The new VNX-VSS100 promises what EMC says is “uncompromising availability, simplicity, and affordability” in a package tailor-made for distributors and systems integration partners.

The new VNX-VSS100 complements EMC’s existing Isilon platform, which is a scale-out data lake solution that the company says is ideally suited for large camera installations.

With the new VNX-VSS100, EMC says it has developed an edge-to-core platform for customers who need advanced storage and analytics capabilities both at the edge of their environments where cameras are located and at the core of the data centers where information can be processed and analyzed, and then stored in the most cost-effective and efficient manner possible.

In conjunction with the new product announcement, EMC also announced new and expanded partnerships with Axis, Genetec, Milestone, Verint and other companies who compete in the market, which is forecasted to grow into a $28 billion opportunity by 2018.

IDC analyst Christopher Chute said in a prepared statement that EMC is demonstrating technology leadership with this new platform and should help physical security-specific vendors develop more robust and flexible solutions. As for EMC, Michael Gallant, senior director with the company’s video surveillance practice, said the company has put together one of the best use-case storage systems in the world.

“Video being collected today by public and private organizations is more valuable than ever and technology owners want to merge it with other data sets,” Gallant said in an interview with Channel Partners.

When asked what role EMC plans on playing in the market, he said the company is focused on becoming an enabler. Whether that’s helping business partners devise blueprints or offer solutions platforms, the company is keen on expanding its capabilities without over stepping its boundaries. The company has no plans to devise cameras, for example, or try to be all things to all people. Instead, it is focusing on building purpose-built platforms that leverage its storage heritage and business partnerships that are focused on the growing security space.

“Our value proposition is an open, flexible, cost-effective platform that is analytics-ready,” Gallant said.
