Ipswitch Inc, known for their IT network management software, has launched WhatsVirtual 2.0 with a slew of new features. It’s available now. If virtualization management is your game, read on for the details…

For the uninitiated, WhatsVirtual is a plug-in module specifically for VMware based virtual server infrastructure. Version 2.0 brings the ability to natively integrate with the VMware vSphere API and manage ESX, ESXi hosts, while mapping and monitoring the entire virtual network from one console.

WhatsVirtual 2.0 is also supporting vCenter, vMotion, high availability and virtual clusters. Here’s the specific breakdown of those key features:

  • vCenter – discovers, monitors and controls all virtual resources

  • vMotion – monitors live migrations as VMs move across physical servers for  mapping of physical server relations

  • High Availability – gives complete access to historical information and reports and tracks VMs as they are automatically restarted or moved to other physical servers

  • Virtual Clusters – manage VMware cluster discovery and mapping, configurations, out-of-the-box workspace views, alert center thresholds and Web reports

Right now, WhatsVirtual 1.0 comes at an introductory price of $1,495 USD and requires WhatsUp Gold 14.2 to run. Then WhatsVirtual 2.0 is added as a free upgrade. You can check out the details here.

Meanwhile, virtualization is expected to be a key theme at this week’s Red Hat Summit in Boston. During the conference, Red Hat is expected to maintain a careful balancing act: Partnering with Microsoft while also promoting Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) cost benefits over Microsoft and VMware. We’ll be tracking news at the conference and watching closely for more trends.
