What will the future hold for the bring your own device (BYOD) trend? TUC Managed IT Solutions (formerly The Utility Company) CEO Mark Scott (pictured) predicts that desktop as a service (DaaS) will be the main topic of discussion among managed services providers (MSPs) in 2013. Scott believes DaaS is the ideal platform for cloud computing in small- and medium-sized businesses (SMB).

TUC Managed IT Solutions, a Canada-based company on the MSPmentor 100 list, has focused a great deal of its efforts on DaaS. “We see desktop-as-a-device (not to be confused with hosted-VDI) as the future of corporate computing and the BYOD movement” says Scott. “The company is taking this forecast so seriously that it has already invested a lot of time and energy into it, which, according to Scott, will result in DaaS becoming a key offering in 2013.

The company is focusing on expanding its horizons, but not with mobile device management (MDM). “There’s a lot of hype around MDM, but realistically mature MSPs have been delivering remote support for the various access devices for years,” says Scott. His company will focus more on information security and the opportunities for MRR (monthly recurring revenues) in the mid-maket. “Information security is another area we are really looking to expand, particularly with the inevitability of BYOD,” says Scott. “We are really excited about the mid-market and the MRR opportunities there for co-managed services, virtualization, and managed security.”

Scott says that the company has evolved its model to more of an MSP aggregator. “We evolved our model to more of an MSP aggregator and have made several acquisitions along with more to come,” says Scott. “As a result, there are two aspects to our business.” The first aspect is TUC Brands, which is involved in market development across North America through corporate acquisitions, and the second, TUC Managed IT Solutions, is the new brand name for the managed services operations under which all acquired entities operate.

TUC Managed IT Solutions has 100 employees and more than 50 franchises, primarily serving customers with 10 to 250 employees. The company targets major markets in North America.
