Azure Disaster Recovery Services Goes Live

Microsoft (MSFT) has announced general availability of Azure Site Recovery, its cloud-based disaster recovery offering that went into preview mode back in June.
According to a blog post by Abhishek Hemrajani, program manager for cloud and enterprise for Microsoft Azure, early customers who have been participating in the limited release are using the disaster recovery service to "consistently replicate, protect and seamlessly failover virtual machines directly to Microsoft Azure."
Hemrajani noted that the goal of Azure Site Recovery is to open up the ability to access disaster recovery and business continuity services to "everyone, everywhere." Disaster recovery and business continuity are priorities for CIOs, he wrote, and Azure is aiming to make it possible for all businesses with Azure Site Recovery, which has gotten a technology boost through the integration of InMage, which Microsoft acquired in July.
With the general availability release, Microsoft has also announced several new features, including:
One-click orchestration of disaster recovery plans. Azure Automation runbooks can now be invoked directly from recovery plans.
Tracking initial replication process as virtual machine data gets replicated to customer-owned and managed, geo-redundant Azure Storage accounts.
Simplified setup and registration that is meant to streamline the disaster recovery setup process.
At-scale configuration of virtual machine replication and protection settings to ensure apps are set up with the protection they require.
Near-synchronous replication with support for recovery point objectives as low as 30 seconds. Customers also have the ability to retain consistent snapshots from a 24-hour window.
Additional security and data encryption that ensures data is secure when replicates to Azure.
A self-service disaster recovery model with full support for disaster recovery drills using test failover, planned failover that guarantees zero data loss, unplanned failover and failback.
Audit and compliance reporting with reliable recovery for risk-free, non-production-impacting, frequent and high-confidence disaster recovery testing that meets organizations' compliance needs.
