The longtime CEO of Boomi, Chris McNabb, joined the company a decade ago. Whether he plans, or will be asked, to continue leading Boomi is uncertain. A Boomi spokesman said the companies are not providing any further information aside from what is in the announcement, which didn’t indicate his future.
Boomi is best known for its platform designed to integrate SaaS solutions with on-premises applications. The platform is called AtomSphere and its connectors are Atoms.
Boomi was among the early providers of integration platform as a Service (iPaaS). The company describes its iPaaS as a platform that delivers a cloud service for application, data, process and service-oriented architecture (SOA) integration. Boomi offers it on a single-instance, multitenant architecture that integrates among cloud and SaaS services, on-premises applications and cloud/SaaS to on-premises software.
The Boomi Master Data Hub is a cloud-based MDM platform designed to enable customers to deploy a master data management hub as a service.
Many of Boomi’s customers use the company’s tools to provide integration with B2B partners including vendors, suppliers, distributors, partners and industry marketplaces to provide more intelligent processing and trading. It supports key EDI standards as well as more modern communication interfaces for exchanges including AS2, FTP/Secure FTP and web services such as SOAP and HTML.
The Boomi API Management platform configures APIs and exposes them in real-time interchanges. It’s designed for central testing and deployment of APIs and enforces contracts and policies with an API gateway. It also monitors the health of APIs.
One of Boomi’s more recent introductions, Boomi Flow, is a low-code tool designed to provide an agile approach to building and automating workflows.
The Boomi Data Catalog is designed to discover and match data across systems, applications and people, based on a trusted model.
Boomi’s largest alliance partners are NetSuite and Salesforce, which it offers more than 1,500 integration connectors. But it also offers partners its iPaaS SDK, launched at Boomi World in 2018.

Dell’s asset liquidation continued on Monday. Francisco Partners and TPG said they are acquiring Boomi from Dell for $4 billion.
The deal poses various questions. Private equity firms always seek a return on investment. Perhaps they haven’t determined their plan. Maybe it will lead to an eventual IPO or sale to another company, or perhaps they will fund other acquisitions to grow the Boomi business.
