The last few days have seen a flurry of acquisition activity in the channel, in particular in the cloud and consulting services arenas. Service providers looking to better position themselves for competitive advantage or acquisition should take note of the trends these deals highlight.
Oracle (ORCL) has agreed to buy Textura (TXTR), a provider of cloud-based collaboration and productivity tools for the construction industry. The transaction, valued at approximately $663 million, comes as Oracle continues to build its cloud business and rely on acquisitions of niche providers to fill gaps in its own portfolio.
It’s been a busy few days for Oracle, which also announced its recent acquisition of cloud-based (seeing a trend?) energy software provider Opwer (OPWR) for $487.3 million this week. Where Textura specializes in construction, Opower provides cloud services for the energy and utilities sector. Oracle’s already robust utilities suite will be enhanced by Opower’s more advanced offerings, and its existing clientele will be supplemented by Opower’s more than 100 global customers.
Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (CY) is diversifying its offerings with the acquisition of Broadcom Limited’s (AVGO) wireless Internet of Things (IoT) business for $550 million. IoT offers a vast and natural growth opportunity for chipmakers as companies scramble to provide the chips for the more than 29.5 billion connected devices expected by 2020.
Business consulting services provider Huron Consulting Group (HURN) has closed an acquisition of the US assets of ADI Strategies, Inc., with plans to acquire ADI’s international assets later this year. ADI provides enterprise performance management and business intelligence services and is an Oracle Platinum Partner, and its existing suite of services will be a strategic complement to Huron’s, positioning the already strong player for continued success.
