A patent application filed by Apple reveals that the consumer electronics titan is exploring allowing its iPhone users to take 3D pictures.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office revealed this week a patent application that describes a system that would capture, process and render 3D images with dual-camera hardware, Apple Insider reported.

The system would supposedly be able to record video in 3D and create images that could be turned into a single, three-dimensional picture.

Sprint announced last week the HTC EVO 3D, which lets you capture and view video in 3D and share at 4G speeds, what the carrier calls a glasses-free 3D experience.” No word yet when that will hit the market.
