CenturyLink Acquires DBaaS Provider Orchestrate
CenturyLink has added DBaaS provider Orchestrate to its portfolio. Here's everything you need to know. CenturyLink (CTL) has added database-as-a-service (DBaaS) provider Orchestrate to its portfolio. Orchestrate’s service initially became deployable via CenturyLink Cloud last month. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and Orchestrate co-founders Antony Falco and Ian Plosker and Vice President of Engineering Dave Smith will join CenturyLink as part of the agreement.
So what does the acquisition mean for CenturyLink and its customers? The telecommunications giant said Orchestrate will provide CenturyLink Cloud with new DBaaS capabilities.
Also, a CenturyLink spokesperson told Talkin’ Cloud that the company views DBaaS “as a core service of [its] cloud platform.” The Orchestrate acquisition enables CenturyLink to better integrate DBaaS software into its network, cloud and IT services product portfolio, the spokesperson noted, “for the benefit of [CenturyLink] customers.”
Glen F. Post III, CenturyLink’s CEO, added that the Orchestrate service provides ease of use and the ability to support multiple database technologies, which could make it a viable DBaaS option for his company’s customers.
“CenturyLink’s customers, like most enterprises, are expressing interest in solutions that help them meet the performance, scalability and agile development needs of large-scale big data analytics,” he said in a prepared statement. “We are eager to offer our customers [Orchestrate’s technologies] through the CenturyLink Cloud platform.”
CenturyLink continues to bolster its services portfolio as well. For example, CenturyLink acquired Edmonton, Alberta-based disaster recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS) provider DataGardens in December. DataGardens’ SafeHaven cloud-based disaster recovery software suite provides an offsite virtual data center in CenturyLink Cloud.
Jonathan King, CenturyLink’s vice president of cloud strategy, said the DataGardens acquisition would allow his company to fully integrate DRaaS into its network.
