Dropbox Tops Lists of Most Blacklisted, Whitelisted Apps

The same week that Dropbox acknowledged it had been hacked, a new survey revealed the popular cloud-based storage, productivity and collaboration service was receiving mixed reviews from enterprises mindful of mobile security issues. Mobile Device Management platform provider Zenprise‘s second quarter survey of its customers revealed that Dropbox topped both blacklists and whitelists for apps.The mixed result showcases the ongoing balancing act that IT faces between giving users access to the tools that make them more productive and keeping devices and data secure. Here’s a look at some of the other information revealed in the report.
Additional key findings from the report include:
Both iOS and Android adoption grew in North American over last quarter.
Thirty-four percent of organizations are restricting device resources or apps to protect corporate data by disabling device cameras
Passcodes are the commonly-used mobile device policy in the second quarter, an increase of 10 percent from the previous quarter
One-third of companies are now limiting some app or function.
According to the report, Enterprises make over 100 different third-party applications available to their own mobile users. And these organizations are getting more proactive in terms of apps, too. The report also revealed that enterprises were nearly twice as active in blacklisting or whitelisting apps in Q2 as they were in the previous quarter.
In addition, the report also listed the most commonly blacklisted applications: Angry Birds, eBay, Facebook, and Google Play/the App Store. On the contrary, the most commonly whitelisted applications included: Citrix, Adobe, Evernote, Find My iPhone/iPad, Dropbox, Skype, Keynote, Google Search, Pages, and Cisco AnyConnect.
