Unified communications-as-a-service (UCaaS) has taken the business world by storm recently, and several industry experts have already predicted that the demand for UCaaS will continue to increase over the next few years, too.

But why are companies interested in UCaaS? Danny Windham, CEO of open-source communications technology provider Digium, spoke about UCaaS’s impact on businesses during his keynote presentation at this week’s IT Expo in Miami.

He pointed out that UCaaS can help companies become more efficient, especially if they develop and deploy UCaaS strategies.

“Business communications used to be about a phone on a desk; today, there are dozens of different tools that each boast a unique utility, allowing employees to get certain tasks and jobs done best. These need to be better integrated,” Windham said, according to TechZone360.

Windham noted that there are five stages of businesses that take advantage of UCaaS:

  • Traditional – For businesses that previously used voice solutions only, UCaaS enables these companies to leverage multiple communications methods.

  • Mildly progressive – Using UCaaS solutions that allow businesses to make application programming interface-enabled (API-enabled) upgrades ensures companies can keep their communications systems up to date.

  • Moderately progressive – Businesses that learn about different APIs can find new ways to streamline various communications processes.

  • Cautiously adventurous In addition to APIs, companies can invest in open-source communications tools to gain additional control over their UCaaS systems.

  • Aggressively adventurous – Businesses that want to dive headfirst into the world of UCaaS can use Java, HTML and other web technologies to write their own communications scripts.

UCaaS also could play a bigger role in the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market soon, according to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone service company Vonage (VG).

Alan Masarek, Vonage’s CEO, earlier this month told Fierce Telecom that his company is targeting SMBs that want to reduce their operating costs by using managed cloud services like UCaaS.

“What you see is about a 40 percent reduction in operating costs with no capex so rather than having to go and buy another key system, you move all of that to the cloud,” he said.
