Mobile Phone Vendors Gather Strength in China

Adjusting your mobile device management (MDM) strategy depends on various conditions, including the changes in the worldwide smartphone market. According to a recent IDC report, China smartphone shipments passed the 60 million unit mark in the third quarter of 2012 — a record high and three times more than China PC shipments in the same quarter. In addition, the number of smartphones shipped to China grew 38 percent quarter on quarter.
As expected, Android extended its dominance in the Chinese smartphone market, however, the new iOS and Windows Phone 8 handsets will make things interesting in the near future. The following are the top five smartphone vendors in China in the third quarter of 2012 (ranked by unit shipments):
Samsung — The company remained the leader from the second quarter of 2012 and has inspired both international and domestic vendors to launch their own quad-core and 5 inch-plus screen size models.
Lenovo — Lenovo stayed at number two, outperforming the market through its improvements in channel partnerships.
Coolpad — In the last quarter, Coolpad ranked number six and has now made the top five list. The company broke into the top five for the first time on strong partnerships with all three Chinese carriers.
ZTE — ZTE, previously ranked number three, slipped into the number four spot due to increased competition in the carrier-subsidized handset business.
Huawei — The company stayed steady at number five and has also seen pressure from competition. The company retained its ranking by introducing more dual and quad-core models.
Linux-based smartphones found a niche segment through handsets based on homegrown variant Aliyun OS. What about Apple? Well, Apple’s China shipments declined this quarter, falling down two spots to number six with less than 10 percent market share. Despite the decline, look for Apple to make a rebound with the iPhone 5 slated for a mid-December launch.
