New Fall Smartphones: LG Optimus G, Nokia Lumia 920, 820

Is there room for another major competitor to the Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III? LG hopes so.

The South Korea-based manufacturer has announced that its Optimus G “superphone” is coming to AT&T and Sprint. Touting it as the world’s first quad-core, LTE smartphone with the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, the Optimus G aimed at business users and the general consumer alike is both fast and powerful.

Optimus G users can seamlessly multitask between personal, business and entertainment needs and go beyond the boundaries of traditional on-the-go smartphone capabilities, LG said.

“LG Optimus G is the culmination of cutting-edge technologies provided by LG’s class-leading global entities,” said James Fishler, senior vice president, marketing and go-to-market operations, LG Electronics USA. “Drawing upon expertise from the LG Mobile Communications Company, LG Display, LG Chem and LG Innotek, we have carefully designed a new superphone that encourages users to step beyond everyday boundaries and explore a limitless world of power and creativity.”

The Optimus G has a 4.7-inch display; 32 GB of memory or 16 GB of on-board memory and a microSD slot pre-loaded with a 16GB SD card that can accommodate up to 64GB of expandable memory; an advanced 13 MP or 8 MP rear-facing camera with Time Catch Shot, “cheese shutter” and Smart Shutter and Low Light Shot Noise Reduction; and runs on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

LG says the new device will be available sometime in the fourth quarter; look for announcements from AT&T and Sprint very soon.

Meantime, the Lumia 920 the latest Windows-based smartphone from Nokia will make its debut with AT&T in November (no specific date has been announced).

The Lumia 920 includes the latest advances in Nokia PureView imaging innovation. The 8MP rear-facing camera records HD video in 1080p at 30 frames per second, while the front-facing camera records in 720p HD. Using advanced floating lens technology, the camera in the Lumia 920 is able to take in five times more light than typical smartphones without using flash, making it possible to capture clear, bright pictures and video indoors and at night, the company said.

Look for the Lumia 820 around the same time at Ma Bell. It’s a mid-range smartphone that has the same look and feel of the 900 series, but not quite as many nifty capabilities.

All three of these devices are compatible with 4G LTE networks. Prices are yet to be announced.
