Siemens Communications Inc. yesterday at CTIA Wireless released its Siemens Multi-standard Base Station (MBS).

The system provides Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular operators with one platform for supporting the radio elements for 2G and 3G mobile networks, without needing to buy individual systems for each technology.

Using the Siemens MBS, operators can upgrade 2G base transceiver stations by adding a small slide-in radio server unit to the existing rack. The units fit into standard 19-inch GSM base transceiver stations from a number of vendors, enabling any such station to support multiple standards, according to Siemens.

The radio server unit also can be used with the remote radio head, which can be mounted on a roof or tower.
