SMS.ac Inc. has launched Mobile Pods, a service that makes multimedia Web applications available to mobile consumers around the world.

The company also said at CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas it has released its xPML markup language that allows content owners and developers to convert their existing applications into Mobile Pods.

SMS.ac claims it has approximately 50 million paying subscribers.

Mobile Pods and xPML work together to turn Web-based content into phone applications. Mobile Pods act as content distribution vehicles while the xPML technology enables the transfer of Web applications directly to wireless handsets.

In the past, consumer access to mobile applications depended on the relationships between individual developers and specific mobile operators, said SMS.ac CEO Michael Pousti. With the launch of Mobile Pods, SMS.ac is providing turnkey access to exciting applications that developers can take live to the worlds largest community of mobile consumers in a nominal period of time.
