There’s been a lot of movement in the EMM market, and managed services providers (MSPs) have been waiting for a leader to emerge, but, unfortunately, we all may be waiting a while. Here’s a recap of the market’s recent shakeup.
In January, VMware announced plans to acquire mobile device management (MDM) vendor AirWatch for approximately $1.54 billion to leverage AirWatch’s security expertise.
VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger (pictured) said the acquisition will “add a foundational element” to the company’s end-user computing portfolio, which will enable customers to “turbo-charge their mobile workforce without compromising security.”
AirWatch CEO John Marshall told VMware partners at PEX 2014 that AirWatch will work with VMware’s ecosystem, leveraging strategic, technology, reseller and service provider partners.
How will VMware’s portfolio look after AirWatch fully integrates AirWatch into its end-user computing portfolio? How will the virtualization company compete with other big vendors in the EMM space? We’ll keep you updated.
SOTI CEO Carl Rodrigues (pictured) spoke with MSPmentor to provide his input on recent shifts in the EMM space, pointing out to readers that many independent EMM vendors have won VC funding — something SOTI hasn’t done.
“A lot of these EMM vendors out there are running on VC funding, and they’re getting a lot of pressure to do something, whether it’s to go public or sell out to someone because that funding was running out,” he said.
Rodrigues also pointed out that MobileIron, one of SOTI’s competitors, will either be bought or go public within the year, a prediction worth paying attention to over the next couple of months.
Shortly after SOTI CEO Carl Rodrigues hinted at MobileIron possibly going public or selling, rumors hit the wire about the company gearing up for an IPO.
MobileIron declined to comment on IPO plans, but Bloomberg recently reported that MobileIron has been working with a few banks, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc., on an IPO, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter.
Gartner Enterprise Mobility Research Director Bryan Taylor told MSPmentor that “the consolidation of the highly competitive EMM market through mergers, acquisitions, and exits was inevitable.”
Questions to ask: What does MobileIron CEO Bob Tinker (pictured) have planned for his company in the upcoming months? How will MobileIron compete against other independent EMM companies in the space? Which megavendor would be interested in acquiring MobileIron?
Good Technology has agreed to acquire mobile service management (MSM) company BoxTone to satisfy end user mobility demand, the company said.
Good Technology President and CEO Christy Wyatt (pictured) said that Good’s acquisition of BoxTone brings together the “industry’s leading provider of secure mobility solutions for data, devices and apps with the industry innovator in mobile service management.”
How will Good leverage BoxTone to compete in the EMM Space? We’ll find out and report back.

Enterprise mobility management (EMM) players, including VMware (VMW), AirWatch, SOTI Inc., MobileIron and Good Technology, over the past month have turned the EMM space on its head, forcing the rest of us in the channel to pay close attention to companies in the space.
