In the wake of Verizon Communications second-quarter earnings results, the carriers Lowell McAdam has done his part to whip up the iPhone 5 release date rumors.

Verizon Wireless had expected to get a healthy bump in iPhone sales this summer from the iPhone 5, but now that uptick is expected to be reported for Q3, he noted. Speaking on an earnings call, the incoming CEO (and current COO) said, We are probably what I would view as maybe a quarter behind what we had talked about in January.

While he did say that Apple has not shared specifically when the iPhone 5 will drop, he added: we expect that probably sometime in the fall, and I think you will see a significant jump there when we get to that point.

And in a TV interview with CNBC talking about Verizons financial results, he said: We had assumed that we would see an iPhone early in the summertime as its been usually, and thats going to be a little bit later in the year now.

Verizon Wireless activated 2.3 million iPhone 4 units in the second quarter, but was outpaced by AT&T, which reported activating 3.6 million iPhones.
