Why Microsoft Didn't Make Gartner's EMM Magic Quadrant Report
Gartner didn't include Microsoft in its Magic Quadrant report this year. Here's Gartner's reasoning, as well as Microsoft's.
Gartner, Inc. (IT) didn’t include Microsoft (MSFT) in this year’s Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) report — or maybe you didn’t notice.
Either way, you may now be wondering why the tech giant was left out of the report, especially after it made several enhancements to its mobile device management (MDM) products and strategy this year.

Microsoft even recently bundled Windows Intune, Azure Active Directory Premium and Azure Rights Management Services into one solution, dubbed Microsoft Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS).
Gartner’s reasoning for excluding Microsoft from its Magic Quadrant report is strictly based on business metrics and technical capabilities:
“Microsoft did not meet the business metrics necessary for inclusion. Microsoft’s Enterprise Mobility Suite is a combination of Windows Intune (for MDM and mobile application management), Microsoft Azure Rights Management and Microsoft Azure Active Directory Premium.”
Following its explanation, the IT research firm offered a short suggestion to the tech giant, which has been ramping up its efforts to become a leader in the EMM space:
“The offering has promise, but Microsoft must drive adoption and demonstrate that it can meet enterprise requirements.”
A Microsoft spokesperson told MSPmentor via email that the company was excluded from the report because of timing:
“We started providing robust MDM capabilities in the Fall 2013 release of Windows Intune. That said we didn’t have enough time in the market to meet the business metrics for the EMM MQ, when it kicked off in January 2014.”
Microsoft’s spokesperson said: “We value Gartner’s expertise in enterprise services and they continue to be an important information channel and advisor as we build our roadmap for enterprise mobility.”
As far as next year goes, Microsoft is confident that its EMS suite will be evaluated, the spokesperson said.
