IT management solutions vendor ManageEngine, a division of Zoho Corp., will be adding Ruby on Rails support to its Applications Manager performance monitoring software package. The move lets Applications Manager monitor applications that are running on Ruby on Rails environments and measures user satisfaction with key web applications and track performance metrics of Ruby components, according to ManageEngine.

The announcement builds on other ManageEngine news from HostingCon last week when parent company Zoho announced its Site24x7 website and web application monitoring service would offer standardized user experience scores for the websites and applications it monitors.

ManageEngine added the Ruby on Rails support because of the development environment’s popularity among startup companies, Zoho President Raj Sabhlok told MSPmentor. Now Applications Manager can be extended to provide monitoring for Ruby on Rails-developed applications, too.

The Ruby on Rails monitoring capability can help organizations in two ways. First, it can help as development teams actually use the ROR development environment to identify performance and other issues. And second, it can help MSPs and IT organizations find and fix problems as they occur.

ManageEngine says that administrators can view transaction trace history and performance metrix of all components from URLs to SQL queries. If there are any performance degradations, a trail of Ruby method invocations can enable IT to pinpoint the problem code.  Startups can also run Applicatiosn Manager on an Amazon EC2 instance, providing perspective from outside of the data center as well as inside.

Applications Manager lets users monitor up to five Rails application instances for free and supports Mongrel, Phusion Passenger, WEBrick, Apache, lighttpd, Nginx and other Rails web servers, ManageEngine said.

ManageEngine Applications Manager 10.6 is available now with prices starting at $795 for up to 25 servers or applications. A fully functional, 30-day trial version is also available for download at http://www.manageengine.com/apm/download.html
